Yesterday,  a precious young lady, “Sunshine”, suffered the tragic and unexpected loss of her “Papa.”  He was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago and was supposed to start chemo treatments last week.  Suddenly, a few days prior to Thanksgiving  he fell ill, became really sick and hospitalized, and he was unable to start his chemo treatments. He was initially hospitalized in Anderson, SC and then transferred to ICU in Greenville, SC. The doctors called the family in yesterday to give them Papa’s dim prognosis stating the cancer had metastasized throughout his body and he now had pneumonia.  They knew their time was limited but had no idea they were literally going to say goodbye for the last time. Before they made their 30 minute drive back to Anderson, Papa had already passed away.

Papa was an unrelated, elderly gentleman who stepped up to the plate and adopted Sunshine and her older brother when she was 6 years old.   He has been her soul provider and father figure since she was a little girl.  Unfortunately, he had no will in place and no living arrangements set up for Sunshine prior to his death.  Money is and has been a major issue for this precious family as her Papa was elderly, was an amputee and was unable to work.  Despite the constant stress of papa’s declining health and financial issues they always had a smile on their faces and were thankful for what they did have.   To many on the outside looking in, they didn’t have much and sometimes not enough to get by. But what they did have was love and hope in their hearts that never faded. They were beyond appreciative of any bit of help they have ever received and truly asked very little or nothing of others.

“Sunshine” is her nickname that was affectionately given to her at age 6 by her karate sensei, Marty Knight. Her nickname says it all as she has a smile that lights up the room and she exudes sunshine. She has a heart of gold and never stops smiling. Her attitude has always been positive and grateful. She truly has defied all of the odds and is an amazing young  lady. She is very active in year round sports in her school, she is a black belt in karate, she maintains good grades and always strives to do her best. She dreams of going to college and bettering herself.

Sunshine won my heart over several years ago and I love her like she is my own.  I have been a mother figure to her for many years now.   I have always been amazed at her ability to find the good in everyone and everything. She sees the glass half full and always has been  grateful for what she does have.  This precious young lady desperately needs and deserves some help along the way. Her future living situation is unknown at the present time but we are diligently working on it. I know times are tough for everyone and this year has been beyond challenging and it’s also holiday time. That  makes it even harder to ask for help, but she truly needs it. Anything given will be much appreciated and help to make the difference in this beautiful young lady’s future. Please find it in your heart to give a little love to someone in need.  I assure you, the money will be put towards Sunshine’s immediate needs and to help support her moving forward.  She needs our love and support so she can continue to have hope and faith in her future.
