Chickens at North County High School
Donation protected
For just over a year I have been working with my students to create a space at our school where kids can learn about growing food, eating healthy, gardening in harmony with nature, and giving back to the community. This space currently consists of approximately 2000 square feet of garden space where we grow a variety of vegetables and very soon, blueberries. Most seedlings are started in the classroom before being transplanted out by students. In addition to starting seeds indoors, students are currently growing a variety of leafy greens, herbs and tomatoes in various hydroponic systems. All produce that isn’t used for cooking in the classroom or that students don’t take home to their families, is donated to a food pantry.
Now that the program is off to a solid start, we are expanding to include a summer program for students needing internship and volunteer hours, a larger variety of crops, and more native plants and shrubs for pollinators. While I am most excited about our plans to build a continuous flow vermicomposting system, the students can't wait to start raising chickens!
Students have been fundraising and we have been fortunate to have many awesome people support our efforts to this point. I am looking to raise additional funds so that we can continue to keep growing the program to reach more and more people. Money raised through this campaign will mainly help with the cost of purchasing a chicken coop. With any remaining funds, we will purchase compost and mulch for the gardens.
Thank you so much for anything you can do! Please like, comment and share.
