Chicago’s “Walking Man” Joseph Kromelis
Donation protected
Joseph Kromelis, a 75-year-old unhoused man known affectionately to Chicagoans as the “Walking Man,” is in critical condition after someone doused him in lighter fluid and lit him on fire as he slept. Police say he suffered severe burns to more than half of his body.
I recently left Chicago but encountered Joseph many times in my years there. He was always soft spoken and kind. I’m heartbroken and horrified by this unprovoked attack on him. He will have many needs in the coming months. I would like to make sure he at least has room and his basic needs met while he recovers after he’s released from the hospital. I’m currently working to connect with local media or law enforcement who can coordinate to ensure Joseph receives any money raised.
So often the unhoused, people like Joseph, are overlooked and ignored. Please don’t look away now. If you are able please consider helping Joseph get through this incredibly difficult and painful time. Donations, shares and well wishes are all welcome and appreciated!
