Hi guys - as most of you probably know, Chewy is my 9 year old chocolate lab and best bud. I adopted him from Second Chances Rescue when he was 5 years old.. and he may now be working on his fifth or sixth chance. If you know me at all, you know Chewy, because we have spent almost every minute together for the past 4 years.
Around Thanksgiving, Chewy started limping, and after consulting with his vet, I made an appointment with an orthopedic specialist for a consultation. What the orthopedist originally thought was an ACL injury turned out to be Osteosarcoma - a quick spreading bone cancer.
Our options for treatment are limited, but I want to do everything I can to give him the best chance possible. Chewy's previous owners abandoned him at the vet because they could not afford his medical bills - and I promised I would never consider letting anything like that happen again.
Chewy's doctors recommended an immediate amputation, followed by 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Right before Christmas, Chewy had his back left leg amputated, and last week we started Chemotherapy. If you see Chewy, you wouldn't even know anything is wrong... his tail is wagging just as crazily as ever, and he is still the sweetest boy.
I want to continue to be able to give Chewy the best care possible. His amputation + chemotherapy treatments are expected to total ~10k, having spent about $5500 so far. This is all coming after an $8000 emergency surgery Chewy had earlier in 2023.
As you can imagine, this has all been extremely stressful, and I'm so thankful to all of you who have reached out and offered an overwhelming amount of love and support for Chewy and I. We couldn't be doing this without you, thank you so much <3
