Bringing Chess to Africa – A Journey of Hope and Learning

My name is Stefan Macak and I am an International Master from Slovakia.

I am embarking on a life-changing journey: driving from Slovakia to Africa, and across every country on the continent, to share the power of chess with children who need it most. During this summer I visited Mauretania, Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. I will return to Guinea in December.

With my car packed full of chess sets, boards, and books, I will set up small chess clubs in schools, villages, and even on street corners—giving kids the chance to learn, play, and build critical skills that can transform their futures.

Chess teaches patience, strategy, and resilience—qualities that empower young minds far beyond the board. My mission is to bring this opportunity to as many children as possible, one game at a time.

I plan to spend every summer and winter holiday for the next couple of years pursuing my goal.

The first two months of this journey will cost approximately £20,000, covering essential expenses like chess sets, chess books, car, fuel, visas, vehicle maintenance, and basic living costs. Even a small donation can make a difference, £5 is enough for chess set and £3 for a chess book.

I have been coaching chess for many years and I feel very fortunate to have a job, that I have passion for.

Chess has made my life so much easier and this might be my little way to give back. I recently finished one of the hardest through hikes in the world-the Pacific Crest Trail where I walked 4250km from Mexico to Canada and I hope, that I can put the skills that I acquired there to good use throughout my journey in Africa.
