Cheryl Nugent had a Whale of a Fall Fundraiser

Cheryl Nugent, the amazing dog groomer, freelance community organizer, Public Radio DJ, and Kodiak Whale Fest coordinator (how we met), ended August with quite a bang! Cheryl took a bad fall

at midnight on August 31 resulting in major injuries to her left leg requiring emergency surgery the next morning to insert a rod though her tibia and 7 screws to deal with the 5 major breaks not to mention multiple hairline fractures. 

Cheryl had recently started her new business Happy @ Home Pet Sitting, when a late night walk with two boarders resulted in Cheryl taking a tumble trying to get ahold of one to harness her for the outing.

Cheryl has been wheelchair bound since, and unable to work. Cheryl also helps out her two kids who are living in Anchorage, one just moved earlier this year, and she has had limited support at home, athough, she finally has a home caregiver for a few hours each week. Cheryl recently gained a measure of independence with a physical therapist coming in twice per week and a change to her healing status after 3 months, by beginning to use a walker carefully a couple of weeks ago. Finally, Cheryl tried to work for the first day last week at a facility where she fills-in as a caregiver, and her right (good) foot swelled up painfully and made that impossible also.

Ms. Nugent is a trooper, and her road to recovery has already been long, having suffered a torn hamstring in 2021, and it will be months before she is able to fully work and a year at least before she is 100%.

Cheryl has lived in Kodiak since 1997, and done it all on her own and has a lot of belief in her own abilities (and so do her friends and loved ones), which we all admire, but we all need a little help sometimes. I have been asking Cheryl to let me set this up since her accident and she finally agreed after this latest setback, with her bank account depleted, and the long winter upon us so let’s help keep Cheryl’s spirits up and please donate to help get Cheryl through until she can reopen her businesses and work again!
