Fundraising to Cycle for Crohn's
Donation protected
Hello, all!
I'm Cheral, a 21-year-old, who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when I was starting high school. When I was told by my GI doctor that I have Crohn's, my family and I were in the dark about what it was and how did I get it. No one in my family has any history of it so it was a first for all of us. As I was going through high school, there would be a few days a week where I wasn't feeling well enough to stay in class so I had to go to the health office. Even though the nurses were really nice and I enjoyed getting to know them, I knew that it was bad to go there a lot. I managed to minimize the trips in my later years, joined a sport (being marching band), and graduated.
When I got into community college, I wanted to do art and make a difference in the concept art industry. After a year of that, I realized that with my growing passion for science, and especially chemistry, I can make a difference in the medicine field. Then and there, I changed my major to Chemistry/Biochemistry to advance medicine and hopefully be a part of finding the cure for Crohn's and colitis and many other diseases.
There are times where side effects from the disease, such as anemia and stomach pains, will affect my studies and my performance in everyday tasks but I persevere through because I know I can get there. With dealing with the issues every day, I know how hard it is to perform any sort of task when the disease flares up and always wanted to help out people who are experiencing the difficulties. With my personal history with Crohn's, I wanted to help spread awareness and help in whatever method I can so I thought that fundraising for the research for Crohn's and colitis would be the first step.
On September 9, 2017, I will participate in the Maine Lighthouse Ride. I'm a beginner Cycler but I would like to make a difference in my life and others. I would also like you to make a difference by sharing my story, spread awareness about the diseases, and if possible, contribute by donating.
I am confirmed to join the race but I will still need to hit the minimum. I will need your support to achieve my goal.
The funds go directly to the branch of Crohn's and Colitis foundation that's called Team Challenge, where through their programs, people raises funds and spread awareness in marathons and races. Any donation will help research facilities further their understanding of the diseases, whether it's the causes, symptoms, and cure for both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
This is an excerpt of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation's explanation of the two diseases and their mission:
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both major categories of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). IBD affects an estimated 1.6 million Americans. These chronic diseases tend to run in families and they affect males and females equally. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine.
The Mission of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America is: To cure and prevent Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis through research and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these digestive diseases through education and support.
If you want to donate through my personal page, I have a fundraising page under TeamChallenge where it will directly support the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
