Laine Sawyer’s Journey: lymphoblastic lymphoma plus leukemia

Donation protected

Laine has cancer. Three words that are hard for his grandmother to write.
On Jan. 26, 2024, Laine Sawyer was admitted to the PICU at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon with a 15x10x6 cm mediastinal tumor threatening his airway and his heart. His right lung was collapsed which required a chest tube to drain the fluid that was flooding the pleural space. After a lymph node biopsy, testing the fluid draining from his chest tube, a lumbar puncture and a bone marrow biopsy, Laine’s team of doctors were ready with the diagnosis. T Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma AND Leukemia.
The fifteen days in the hospital were critical and rough. But even through the pain and sickness, the awesome nurses and doctors got to know Laine as we do: he is good, kind, helpful, nice, smart, and determined to get well. Laine is 17, finished high school and started college courses when he was 16, enjoys Major League Baseball, playing the drums and guitar, and fishing with his family.
Some good news: The doctors at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital are confident Laine’s treatment plan will have a good outcome.
Some challenging news: The treatment plan is at least 2 years and 8 months long, which includes chemotherapy, blood work, scans, lumbar punctures, transfusions and possible hospital stays.
Laine and his family live 2 1/2 hours from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. They will be making the 250 mile round trip at least once a week to the hospital for Laine’s treatment. On average during the first 8 months, 3 times a week.
Many loved ones have reached out to ask how they can help during this challenging time. This is one thing that would help immensely. Thank you for fasting, praying, and sharing your concern. We are seeing miracles every day. The Sawyers are grateful and humbled to receive so much love, help, encouragement and support from their community, family and friends.
We love you Laine!
