Wandering gnome!? Miles for Melanoma!? 4228 miles!?
What in the world does all that mean?
My name is Chelsea and I am headed cross country on a bike. Yes, one that you pedal. I am no hard-core biker or anything of the sort. Just an average girl who enjoys the outdoors, the sun, a good experience, and a solid cause.
For the past 3 years, I have been living and working in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. While I was in Germany, I received the call no one wants to answer. My father, a melanoma skin cancer survivor was in a coma. The cancer was back and there was nothing to do but say goodbye. I hopped right on a plane and the rest was history. My father, Don Edwards Jr. passed away on August 13, 2013. He knew that it was likely that the cancer would come back so he attended all his scheduled doctors appointments and wore his sunscreen (he was a big man so we burned through quite a bit of that magic lotion). All kids say that their father was the best. However, my dad, Donny, as many knew him by, really was one of the best! He was the best husband, father, and friend. He is missed every day.
Unfortunate as my family's experience has been, we are far from alone in battling melanoma. 1 in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime and researchers have estimated that 1 person dies of melanoma every 57 minutes! 57 minutes! That isn't even a whole 60 minutes! Not even a whole hour!
Through biking across America, I want to raise awareness of a sun-safe outdoor lifestyle, raise money for melanoma research and the Donald J Edwards Jr. Memorial Fund, and remember my father and all other lives lost to melanoma as well as all who are battling melanoma today.
My goal of $8,456 may seem like a very strange number, but it is actually the number of miles I will be pedaling (4228) x2! Let's see how we do!
