A Challenge to Rutherford County: Who Will Step Up?
Rutherford County Assessor of Property Rob Mitchell is moving his mission for local youth to the center of the board. Today, he has issued an open challenge to community leaders for a "Checkmate for Charity" showdown.
The goal? To prove that critical thinking, patience, and grace under pressure are the most valuable skills we can pass on to the next generation.
The Challenge Details:
The Format: A best-two-out-of-three "blitz" match (10-minute time controls).
The Stakes: The loser donates $1,000 to a local charity supporting youth education.
The Mission: To launch expanded chess programs in Rutherford County schools and community centers.
Why Chess?
Chess is more than just a game—it's a gymnasium for the mind. By teaching our children to play, we are teaching them to:
Think Critically: Analyze the board before making a move.
Plan Ahead: Understand that every action has a long-term consequence.
Resolve Conflict: Navigate high-pressure situations with a calm, strategic mind.
How You Can Get Involved
We are calling on business owners, elected officials, and community icons to help our children reach their full potential.
Issue Your Own Challenge: Do you play chess? Publicly challenge a peer or rival to a match for charity. Let’s get the whole county playing!
Sponsor the Initiative: Help us provide chess sets and instructors to schools and community centers.
Become a Mentor: Share your love for the game and help a student learn to think three moves ahead.
Checkmate for Charity is about more than winning a game; it's about making a winning move for Rutherford County’s future.
