CHAT Academy Summer Program
Tax deductible
CHAT (Culture of Health-Advancing Together) needs your generous support:
Houston has the highest number of refugees and new immigrants, who generally struggle with English language skills, among other things. Refugee children do not receive sufficient help in the classroom. Limited teacher time and resources result in lack of support and failure in school. This problem leads to bullying, gang participation and drug trafficking among refugee and immigrant children.
There is a huge need for after-school programs to be successful in school. According to the Harris County Department of Education, only 1 in 24 children have access to free and safe after-school programming.
These issues are exacerbated in the summer break, as children are not attending school at all and may be left unattended throughout the day.
CHAT provides a safe after-school learning environment, with tutoring that is tailored to each student’s needs.
Currently, we have more than 50 students in our after-school tutoring program. This FREE program is run by VOLUNTEERS and is offered Monday through Friday afternoon.
CHAT offers:
*Homework help and subject-specific tutoring for all grade levels.
* Social and emotional learning through educational games, and other programs and activities in a fun and healthy environment.
* English conversation and health classes for women - Health education is the core of all our programs for children and adults.
* Skill building for employment opportunities
In order to successfully run the summer program CHAT needs $5,000 for the following:
* Teachers---$1600
* Classroom rent---$1600
* Classroom supplies---$1000
* Lunch/Snacks----$800
