Hi, I’m Sean Georgeson, an ecologist and science communicator based in Queensland, Australia.
I was born in Liverpool and moved to Aotearoa New Zealand as a child. Growing up surrounded by nature and spectacular coastlines led to SCUBA diving and a love for the ocean.
But, our oceans are in crisis. Coral reefs, among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, are disappearing at an alarming rate. These vibrant structures support over 25% of all marine life, protect coastlines from storms and erosion, and provide food and income to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. But they’re at risk. Due to growing pressures from climate change, overfishing, pollution, and ocean acidification, up to 90% of the world's coral systems could be lost by 2050.
That’s why I founded Coralition, an initiative connecting reef advocates, scientists, and everyday people to raise awareness and strengthen collaboration for coral conservation.
Charting for Change is an educational storytelling journey and fundraiser, focusing on the coral reefs and coastal communities of Southeast Asia. I’ll visit some of the region’s most remote and threatened reefs, sharing the stories of the people and projects working to protect them.
This journey aims to:
- Build global awareness of coral ecosystems
- Amplify local voices
- Connect reef protectors across borders
Who We’re Supporting
This first phase of the journey is dedicated to raising funds for Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and their much-needed initiative, The Great Reef Census.
The Great Reef Census is a citizen-powered project that collects vital coral health data across the Great Barrier Reef with the help of volunteers, tourism vessels, and marine scientists. This data helps us understand the state of the reef, monitor changes over time, and direct protection efforts where they’re needed most.
Your support will help:
- Expand the reach and frequency of reef surveys to improve our understanding of coral health and biodiversity across the Great Barrier Reef.
- Mobilize communities and visitors to become active reef guardians by fostering awareness, encouraging responsible behaviors, and promoting participation in conservation activities.
- Strengthen public engagement in reef protection by supporting the Reef Intervention Training (RIT) Program, which empowers young Indigenous leaders with advanced skills to actively conserve the Great Barrier Reef.
Every contribution deepens our understanding and strengthens our ability to protect the world’s largest living structure. Join us in charting a course for coral conservation, and let’s make this first leg count: for science, for community, and for the reef.
