Charon at the 2025 Hamilton Fringe Festival

Donation protected
Little Bird Theatre is bringing the world premiere of Charon to the 2025 Hamilton Fringe Festival from July 18-27!

---------

Charon, written and directed by Jacob Hunter, is a project inspired by his 2023 visit to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he rediscovered the joy and accessibility of writing and producing. The play seeks to answer the question: "What if death wasn’t scary but instead was a comforting figure guiding us to the end?" This exploration of mortality, infused with compassion and humour, draws inspiration from some of his favourite artists, including Sartre and Beckett, and unlike them insinuates that hell is not other people, but is ourselves.

Charon, the ferryman of the River Styx, embraces a young, ordinary Daphne as she struggles with her transition from life to death, helping her grasp the universal concepts of fate and fear. As they journey from life to the afterlife, Daphne discovers the power of mentorship and kindness as she fights the memories of her past with Charon offering perspective from religions across the globe.

This new play will feature Ali Farhadi as Charon and Jessica Konkle as Daphne.

The Little Bird Theatre team is incredibly excited to be working with the amazing people at The Gasworks as 141 Park St N in Hamilton Ontario to bring this production to life.

The Gasworks was purchased by The John and Ellie Voortman Charitable Foundation in 2014 to fuel arts, education, and community in Hamilton and they are continuing to do so by hosting programming for this year's Hamilton Fringe Festival.

Costs for this production will be supported in part by ticket sales, however the overall cost of the production will be $3000 -$3500.

The team at Little Bird Theatre is striving to support the production of this show on our own and will be working on a profit share model to be able to support our amazing cast, who will put their hearts and souls into this production, our primary goal is just to break even as a producing team, provide reasonable payment to our actors for their amazing work, and continue to produce theatre in the GTA.

A breakdown of our costs are below:

$1400 venue rental fee, $675 Fringe fest fee, $30 application fees, rehearsal costs ($1000), props/costume ($150-$200), physical advertisements ($100-$150), online advertising ($75-$100), and other miscellaneous costs.

If you are able, please support and/or share our campaign, buy a ticket to see our show, and come support the festival. We will see you this Summer at The Gasworks!
