My cousin, Charnita, has been bravely battling aggressive breast cancer for the past 3 years, all while carrying the unbearable grief of losing her oldest son in a senseless act of violence in 2022. Through it all, she has shown incredible strength, unwavering faith, and determination. Her trust in God has carried her through every challenge.
2022: Suffered the devastating loss of her oldest son.
2023: Diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (TRIPLE -) → lumpectomy → chemo → radiation.
2024: Cancer returned (HER2) → more chemo → double mastectomy (Feb 2025).
2025: Just months later, doctors discovered the cancer (TRIPLE-) had returned for the 3rd time.
Charnita had made several trips to MD Anderson to see specialists. She is now undergoing chemo again and has been recommended for a Cryoablation procedure at MD Anderson. Her doctors strongly believe this is medically necessary. Still, her insurance company has denied coverage, even after multiple appeals with supporting medical documentation from her doctors. This leaves her with an enormous up-front cost of $48,000 before treatment can even begin. Charnita is scheduled to return to Texas for this medical procedure next week, but will have to reschedule if she can't pay the up-front cost.
Charnita is no stranger to HARD WORK. She has been working two jobs over the last few years to pay her medical bills and to save money to help her middle child with college expenses. Although her story is heartbreaking, she has been determined to FIGHT her circumstances and live for her children and granddaughter.
No mother should have to bury a child, and no woman should have to fight cancer three times while also fighting with insurance companies for life-saving treatment. Yet this is Charnita’s reality.
