Charlotte’s MERT treatment

Donation protected
UPDATE: We have reached our goal! Any additional funds will go towards the O’Neill’s living expenses while in San Jose. Thank you all for being so supportive!

My name is Sarah Nadreau and I am good friends with William (Bill) O’Neill and his wife Maureen. Below is a bit of the O’Neill family’s story. We hope you’ll consider supporting them and their daughter Charlotte as she undergoes this life changing treatment.

“Our daughter Charlotte was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when she was just about to turn three. She is now eight years old. Charlotte is sweet, funny, creative and semi-verbal. This means that even though she can sing every word of “Part of your world”,  she can’t express things like “I’m cold” or “I’m hungry” or “I’m lost.” She can’t answer questions about the past or the future which means it’s difficult to know what happens to Charlotte when she’s out of our presence. Charlotte receives speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, equine therapy and music therapy. While these services have helped in many areas, her verbal communication is still close to a 3 year old level.

We have done our best to create a happy and safe life for Charlotte, but Charlotte is much bigger than most kids her age and it is getting harder and harder to keep up. Last month Charlotte darted into a parking lot. Her grandmother fell and hit her head trying to grab hold of her. Luckily they were both ok, but it scared us.

Charlotte started early puberty at age 6 and we struggled to manage her mood swings and anxiety. We were unable to communicate to her why her body was changing and what those changes meant. We decided to begin hormone blockers to delay the onset of puberty. Still, her body is racing ahead.

We hoped that someday her communication would catch up and she might able to attend a normal high school or hold a job or go to college. She is obviously intelligent, but struggles to communicate with others. We began to feel doubtful that those things were in her future.

Then we heard about Magnetic Resonance Therapy (MERT). After doing extensive research we decided to take Charlotte to see a doctor who practices this form of therapy. Charlotte got a brain scan which revealed that Magnetic Resonance therapy could make a big difference in her life. Her brain waves are disorganized, which might be part of the reason that thinking and communicating is so difficult. MERT could help organize her brain waves so that she could better communicate her needs and desires.

I’ve included a link for learning more about the benefits of MERT on all neurological conditions. It’s amazing stuff!

Not surprisingly, medical insurance doesn’t cover this. The treatment would include 30 visits over the course of 6 weeks. We would have to relocate to San Jose for the summer in order to make all of this happen. The cost of the treatment comes to $12,000.00 in total. We are reaching out for help to give Charlotte a chance to better reach her potential in life. We truly believe this treatment will make a difference for her and for us.

Thank you for your consideration in helping us with this incredible opportunity.”
