In memory of Charlotte Goodbody, we are raising money for a project sponsored by the Natural History Society of Jamaica: NHSJ’s Comfort Castle Primary School Scholarship Fund
For a number of years the Society has adopted the primary school at Comfort Castle, a smal settlement in the Rio Grande Valley of Jamaica. They send one or two students annually to a Summer Camp at the Discovery Bay Marine Lab (DBML) on the north coast of Jamaica. Living in a very remote part of the island, these children get little to no exposure outside the community and the impact of this camp has been life changing. The Principal of the school is also planning a field trip to DBML in June, to include students, teachers, and parents.
Charlotte and Ivan Goodbody were both passionate about the natural history of Jamaica and were long time active members of the NHSJ. They were deeply involved in education, having taught LIfe Sciences (Zoology) at UWI for decades and championed issues related to the environment. Ivan played a key role in the establishment and operations of the DBML. As children, we were truly fortunate to spend time there learning about the marine life of Jamaica. We would like other childrean to have this opportunity.
This is a cause that would have excited Charlotte for the many reasons above.
NHSJ is slowly running low on funds to keep up these scholarships and we hope to raise the seed funds to give a boost to this worthy initiative
