Wattletree Early Childhood Centre is fundraising for one of our students Charlie. Charlie has a rare calcium gene mutation of the brain, CACNA1A. This condition affects his speech, gross and fine motor skills. He is unable to walk unaided and suffers ‘attacks', ending up in hospital each time. The mutation has not previously been associated in any available literature or mutation databases, meaning he is the first in the world to be diagnosed. Charlie has undergone 3 drug trials at the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital with no success to date and currently ongoing his fourth drug trial, which we are hopeful for some successful outcomes. We continue to push the limits, impart courage, love, support and guidance to Charlie and hope for a few big wins along the way.
At age five, Charlie is still mastering how to stand. Life for him will be a struggle. He will lack a great deal that most of us take for granted each day. But, for everything he can’t do, he still tries his hardest. He learns and he pushes himself with great enthusiasm and strength. He doesn’t know it yet, but he has a gift that is rare in many of us. He is fiercely determined beyond belief. This is why he will achieve incredible things; he will achieve whatever he believes in!
To help support Charlie’s family with his ongoing medical needs, we are fundraising for this wonderful family. We are asking for the community to help support us with financial donations for Charlie to continue further drug trials, equipment needed for Charlie and ongoing specialist costs.
