Charlie, who is now 5 years old, has been battling weight loss since he was 9 months old. After undergoing a myriad of tests, only for each one to come back "normal" or "negative", on August 4, 2015, he was diagnosed with a large brain tumor and Diencephalic Syndrome. The syndrome, which is caused by the tumor, is the underlying cause of the weight loss. However, due to the location of the tumor, it is inoperable. Thus, the tumor and syndrome are treatable but not curable. The immediate plan was to shrink the tumor with chemo over 18 months, since Charlie is too young to undergo Radiation treatment but he’s now been through 3 chemo regimens and a partial (25%) de-bulking.
This, unfortunately, is a fight Charlie will face for the rest of his life, which means many more tests and future treatments to keep the tumor in check. The doctors advise he will have this tumor the rest of his life, but there are medical breakthroughs every day, so we remain hopeful. We will continue to pray for a miracle treatment to cure this tumor, but in the meantime, Charlie and his family could use your help and prayers as they face this unexpected journey. Please also pray for other children who are currently facing this same condition that they may find strength in their journey as well.
The funds raised here will go to help offset medical expenses for Charlie's treatments, doctor visits, and specialized formula for the feeding tube Charlie must rely on for a while (approximately $500 per month). Should the amount of funds raised exceed their financial need, Heath and Karen would like to give back to Texas Children's Hospital in the form of new toys for the kids (as one would expect, toys at TCH get worn out pretty quickly).
