Charlie & Mackay's new life

** Thank you to each and every one who donated. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. We have closed donations as we have well exceeded our target. Mackay and Charlie now get to start their new life feeling secure and with the opportunity to access services that will help little Charlie to thrive socially, emotionally and in his learning too. Our enormous gratitude.

Imagine living in a ute - with a 6 year old - over Winter. This is what Mackay and Charlie have done - and she's one of many homeless women in Perth who has struggled to find a home for her child. In the time that Mackay has been homeless, she's looked after Charlie beautifully - taking him to school every day, cooking for him, putting up her small Summer tent when the weather allowed so that they were able to sleep lying stretched out instead of bundled up. She's a remarkable, ferocious mumma who's put her child's needs first consistently.
Mackay and Charlie have been part of our family for the last month - and what a delightful gift they've been. Making space in our home for this little family has been a no-brainer - whatever we have, we have more than this little family and sharing our home while they waited for theirs made sense. And now that home is available - and I'd love to give Mackay and Charlie enough money to start their new life together. Anything you have to donate will be deeply appreciated.
**Edited to add some reassurance for all our amazing and generous funders. We're overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support - thank you.
  • My name is Claire Orange and I met Mackay after reaching out to the school Charlie attends to offer her a safe space out of the weather.
  • The funds raised will be primarily used to help Charlie to access services he desperately needs to ensure that he's successful in his learning and socialisation. With his additional needs, and having to overcome the understandable anxiety that comes with housing and food insecurity, Mackay is needed to be present to settle him into his new life and to look after her own needs before finding employment. This money buys Charlie and Mackay time to settle into their new home without the additional stress of job seeking, sourcing childcare and paying for it. Then there's the need to make their car roadworthy and all the costs associated with getting set up in a home.
  • All these amazing funds will be used responsibly. Mackay will access the funds from a co-managed trust
