Charley died suddenly, likely from a fall (we're thinking the top of the refrigerator) though his necropsy was inconclusive. It did show much internal trauma consistent with a fall from a height without being able to right himself (he was a BIG boy).
Despite Herculean labor on the part of staff at Angell Memorial Medical Center-- almost three days in the ICU that included two blood transfusions and a plasma transfusion plus multiple diagnostic tests, a feeding tube and other big expenses--the costs ran up FAST.
I was willing to put everything on credit. Charley was only 10, and I believe he had many years left. He was the most personable, funny, loving boy. He slept next to my head every night, loved to be cuddled and responded with very vocal purring whenever anyone said his name. He is so very much missed.
I was reluctant to ask for help until friends began encouraging I do this. As my friend Lynn said, "it's so you can do the grieving and not have the additional burden of all this cost".
So yes, I am reaching out to friends and family. Anything is fine. I don't really expect the full costs to be covered. I have an itemized list of expenses attached. I included the discharge instructions for the one night he came home because we were all so hopeful.
Thank you for all the good wishes and kind messages I've already received.
With love to you all, and all our companion animals,
Sue
