On Sunday, August 16th, 2020, my Dad was in a motorcycle accident on a back highway in Iowa. He was riding with someone and when his friend noticed his headlights were no longer in his mirror, he turned around to look for him, only he couldn't find him. His friend called my Mom, who then drove to where his friend was to help look for him.
An hour goes by and they still can't find my Dad. My sister, Hannah, thinks of the idea to use Find My iPhone to locate him. When his phone appears to be in a ditch, panic set in and it became a race to find him. My Dad's friend, found him first, my mom close behind. He wrecked his motorcycle into a ditch, it flipped multiple times and landed in a cornfield, which is why they couldn't find the bike. Dad had rolled into a barbwire fence, but they couldn't move him in case he had anything broken.
The ambulance was called and when they arrived, they decided to life flight him to Sioux City. My mom, sister, and I all drove to Sioux City as fast as we could. We were able to see him in the Emergency Room. He had a fractured neck, he was unconscious, and on a ventilator. We prayed over him and they took him to ICU.
Two days later he finally opened his eyes. He had an MRI that shows no signs on Traumatic Brain Injury, but his concussion is so bad that he is very confused. He had trouble recognizing faces. He was responding to commands like "squeeze my hand", his right arm was a little weaker than the rest of his limbs.
When asked cognitive questions, he replied the year was 1995. He think he worked at Flynn and Larson where he worked when he was 23. He knew his kids' names, but thought we were 20, 17, and 10. (We are 31, 28, and 21). He did not remember he was in an accident and did not know he was in the hospital. He was very confused, tired, and disoriented the first three days. He will need to wear a neck brace for the next four to five weeks and will possibly be starting rehab for cognitive and physical strength today.
My mom has been there everyday with him. Hannah was up there on Thursday and I will be going up on Saturday. He could be in the hospital for two more weeks.
He will need physical therapy and cognitive therapy multiple times a week to heal his brain while he is in the hospital. We know God will help heal him and was with him the night he was in his accident. We love our Dad very much and are so thankful for every little progress he is making in his recovery.
Due to my mom needing to be there with him and both of my parents not being able to work, my sister and I decided to start this GoFundMe to help my parents recover from this accident. This will help pay for the therapy in the hospital and after the hospital, any nurses aide my dad may need at home, the ICU stay, any other treatment the doctors recommend, and to pay their bills so my mom can continue to be with him and care for him during this time.
We love and appreciate any support you can help with, words of encouragement, or simply sharing it to others to help us out. Thank you for taking the time to read this and we will continue to update you all with his progress.
