We’re Charles Littlejohn’s friends and family and we’ve set up this fundraiser on his behalf to help defray his legal fees and expenses during incarceration.
Who is Charles?
The Charles we know and love is kind and generous. He’s there for you when you need him and never asks for anything in return. He cares very deeply and intensely and that shows in his thoughts, actions, and words. Charles lives in Washington, D.C. with his girlfriend of 4 years. Together they share a home with their two cats and one grapefruit tree where they are surrounded by memories of their life together. That home will grow quieter after he is sentenced to prison.
What did he do?
While working as a contractor for the IRS, Charles stole the tax returns of Donald Trump, and thousands of other wealthy individuals and leaked them to the press. The New York Times would subsequently run a story on September 27, 2020, which revealed Donald Trump’s years of tax avoidance. On June 8, 2021, ProPublica published the Secret IRS Files detailing the strategies the ultra-wealthy use to minimize their tax bills — sometimes down to zero. Charles shared this material with the press out of a sincere belief that he was acting in the public interest. At the same time, he knows that the unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information is wrong, and he is remorseful for the harm he has caused.
On October 12, 2023, Charles pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized disclosure of tax information. On January 29, 2024, the Court sentenced Charles to the statutory maximum term of five years in a federal prison followed by a term of supervised release and 300 hours community service.
What will happen to the money we raise? Any donated funds will be transferred to a dedicated bank account set up for this purpose. Charles will use funds from that account to pay for present and future legal fees, and if there are sufficient funds, to reimburse him for the fees he has already paid out of pocket or contribute to his commissary account while in prison. He has already spent tens of thousands of dollars on his defense in this case.
Should there be any funds remaining after all legal obligations have been met, our plan is to return the surplus funds back to the donors.
