In 2018, the family had noticed significant weight loss and a few memory changes that led them to seek care from the doctors. In October 2019, after months of waiting for doctors visits and numerous tests, Charlene was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Fortunately, she was able to get on the surgery schedule the following week for a total thyroidectomy in which they also took many lymph nodes for clear margins. Charlene underwent a radioactive iodine treatment to ensure the cancer was gone and continues to attend follow up appointments. Although the family is fortunate that they were able to catch and treat the thyroid cancer, something about the symptoms and diagnosis still did not match up. After a few more scans, cognitive testing, and an appointment with a neurologist, Charlene was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. Frontotemporal dementia is a progressive and degenerative brain disorder that primarily affects the areas of the brain associated with reasoning, planning, problem-solving, memory, personality, behavior, and language. Since the diagnosis, Charlene has had to give up her job as recommended by her doctors. Charlene’s two daughters, Cassie and Lauren, will be providing care and support as needed. The family plans for Charlene to live at home as long and as safely as possible. The funds raised would be used to make modifications to the home in order to maximize independence, provide respite care as needed, and for medical expenses. Don’t hesitate to reach out to Cassie or Lauren with any questions or concerns.
