After graduating from Sandia Prep and being accepted into Lewis and Clark College, I have decided to take a gap year before I start, to travel in Europe for 2+ months, work, learn and explore.
This gap year is important to me because it gives me the opportunity to find myself before starting college. I plan on doing a work-exchange at a hostel in Amsterdam. I like the idea of the constant flux of young people in and out of hostels. Meeting new people, listening to their stories, and finding new friends.
I think that traveling like this can teach more than what you can, confined to a classroom sitting at desks. I know this trip will be hard. Traveling on my own, working in an unfamiliar environment, and constantly problem-solving. But I believe that when one is put in uncomfortable situations, that’s when personal growth happens. Grit is the word that comes to mind.
I’ve gone back and forth, wondering if I should take this trip, thinking of backing out because I’m scared of the unknown and fear for the challenge. But I know in my heart that this is what my next step is supposed to be and I just know this will be such a rewarding experience.
I look forward to seeing how I evolve as a person after this trip. I’ve been saving up for quite a while now working odd jobs and now night shifts at Flying Star Cafe in preparation for this trip. Even with that, traveling can be expensive and I want to be able to get coffee in the mornings, vintage shop in beautiful cities, and go out to eat.
If you would like to contribute something towards my trip, I would be very grateful. I love you all so much!!!!! - Charanjeet Khalsa ♥️
