Solo English Channel Attempt -July 2019.
Ever since I started swimming ( over 50 years ago ), the English Channel was frequently mentioned as something that was a huge challenge for anyone interested in Open Water Swimming. Yet, even though I competed in "Sea Races" when I was young, I never really liked it enough to think that one day I might take on the challenge and attempt a solo crossing of the English Channel.
However, since returning to Open Water Swimming over the last 6 years, I find that I enjoy it now more than ever before. The fear of the cold, the challenge of the waves and tides, combined with the competition makes it all the more appealing to me.
My Solo English Channel attempt that I am planning for July 2019 happened somewhat by accident. I had made some general enquiries early in 2018 mainly out of curiosity and thought no more about it until I was contacted by an English Channel Pilot to say he had a slot due to a cancellation. After some deliberation, I decided to take the slot. Since then I have been training and working hard towards getting ready for the biggest challenge of my swimming career to date.
I also decided I would take this opportunity to raise some funds for two charities that are very relevant today and bring an alternative and worthwhile focus to this challenge. As my business is closely aligned to the Student Sector, I have selected two charities who are dedicated to helping students and young people with mental health issues and do some amazing work in both Ireland and the UK.
The two charities are Student Minds ( www.studentminds.org.uk ) and Jigsaw ( www.jigsaw.ie ). If you are interested and want to support this great cause, please give what you can, no matter how small. ( Note all funds donated will be equally split between both charities ).
I will be posting regular updates on my progress and how my training is going over the coming months so please follow and thanks for your support.
Many thanks,
Barry
