Changing Perceptions ALL 2021

Perceptions Theatre is a black owned, full service, pay-what-you-can theatre company and we started our journey this year in January 2020 and right as we geared up for our general season auditions covid 19 shut the world down.

Our mission is to strengthen the accessibility of theatre to the African-American/Black communities of South Shore and to be an economic and artistic resource for BIPOC artists and we weren't going to let this pandemic stop  these groups from having their voices heard and art shared with the world. We had to regroup and figure out how we would bring theatre to the South Side of Chicago, however do it virtually and we did just that!

In just 11 months we have been able to offer our community:

2 Theatre Workshops (5 artists trained)

5 Play Book Club Meetings (5 BIPOC Playwrights read, 8 Book Club Members)

1 Monologue Series Produced (The Racial Baptism Series)

1 Play Produced (Black Magic)

12 BIPOC Actors Employed

11 BIPOC Technicians Employed

2 BIPOC Teaching Artist Employed

225 YouTube Content Streaming Numbers (and counting)

2,621 Streaming Numbers for  Virtual Monologue Series & Plays

2 Companies Partnered With (Chicago Community Bond Fund & Soul Werk Cafe)

We were able to produce this much art in our community with past donations of just a little over $3,000. Imagine how much more art we could produce and how many more BIPOC artist we can employ and train if we have more funding.

We want to continue to produce art for our community, employ those within our community and train artists in our community and with the band on live theatre not lifting anytime soon that does put a strain on theatre companies especially smaller storefront companies like Perceptions Theatre, who isn't even a year old yet. Unfortunately theatres around the world are closing down for good left and right and we don't want to be apart of that number. We want to be able to adapt to the new normal and still bring art into the homes of those on the South Side in 2021 and now that we are virtual we can reach even more people across the city, state and world.

In 2021 we are planning to produce:

2 Stage Readings

1 Play Festival

1 Devised Play (Partnered with Circles & Ciphers)

6 Training Workshops

12 Play Reading Club Meetings

30-40 BIPOC Actors Employed

10 BIPOC Teaching Artist Employed

10 BIPOC Technicians Employed

This can all be possible with your help! EVERY donation goes back into making our theatre the best it can be for our community. Help us make that possible by donating today and spreading the word.
