The makeup industry is a vibrant and lucrative industry...
but unless you have $30,000 + to go to makeup school, it can be a distant dream and I haven’t even mentioned the lack of diversity and minorities/communities I notice in my dept. on set.
For this reason..
and for 3 years - I been teaching the trade and art of makeup through a Toronto initiative aimed at training BIPOC, LGBTQ and people from at-risk backgrounds, I have met the most brilliant, artistic, remarkable people who have rich stories and mad skills - our industry needs them! I am from an at-risk background and spent some time in youth housing, I feel like my battles are useful to this particular project.
20 Week Course
We started off with 6 week courses but it wasn’t enough for the more serious students to turn it in to an actual business - so my aim was to create a course that is longer and actually resulted in a career path.
NOW I AM SO HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE WE ARE DOING A BIGGER AND LONGER COURSE!! Covering everything from makeup techniques to how to run a small business
The Students..
This course will intensively train and incubate 10-15 carefully selected ambitious individuals who have lived with a multiple challenges, adversity, discrimination, rapid change, risk, homelessness and economical hardships. We have 3 spots left so please message me if you know someone who would love to take the course. It is free of charge.
Funding..
We have some funding but there will be a total of up to 15 students and it goes for 20 weeks, starting October 25th and running through to February 28th 2021,
The funding doesn’t extend far enough for us to be able to get everything they To start working after the course. We need to supply a safe learning space, kits and tools, food and travel expenses if needed. The amount I am asking for allocates roughly 630 per student and this will go to completing their kits.
Change is Forever..
It has always been a dream to open a centre that teaches vocational skills and changes people’s lives forever - and now I am able to at least teach 15 people how to be makeup artists for film/tv/music and equip them with the tools, products and mentorship opportunities to actually kickstart their career.
