Hello.
My name is Carson Kim, and I am a senior at Palos Verdes High School in Los Angeles, CA. I am also an Eagle Scout candidate currently with Troop 378. For my Eagle project, I wanted to do something that would impact the lives of other young people who I am privileged to serve. I decided to work on a project to support The Instituto De Lenguas Modernas (ILEMO).
ILEMO is an English school set up by missionaries to help educate the young people in the Southeast region of Haiti. The highest level of education available in the area is high school, which is difficult to attain for many young people because there is no free education in Haiti. The earthquake in 2010 was devastating for Haiti. With very little resources historically available, the government support became even more scarce. The greatest victims have been the young people of Haiti who desperately needed a change and for someone to provide meaningful opportunities. This was the goal for ILEMO. ILEMO's vision is to educate their students (5-20 years old) so that they have the knowledge and tools required to create the necessary change their communities.
Ansapit (a Haitian city where the majority of ILEMO classes are held), in particular, is special to the project because it is the smallest border city immediately adjacent to the Dominican Republic. Because many English speakers visit this border area, teaching the local youth how to properly speak, read, and write English is an important goal so that they can find jobs as interpreters, teachers, and/or work in the tourism industry.
ILEMO currently has 5 teachers. They do not have enough textbooks and practice books to teach 600 students that they would like to serve. ILEMO does not receive monetary support from their government and the teachers do not get paid for their services. However, ILEMO is still committed in finding ways to empower the young people to learn the English language as a way to offer them opportunities for growth - individually and their community as a whole.
ILEMO is in need of additional textbooks and practice books called English for Everyone (published by Dorling Kindersley Limited). This project will seek to provide 75 textbooks and 75 practice books for each of the 4 levels - Beginner to Advanced. This project, therefore, will serve 300 students - 75 at each level. The goal is to send 300 backpacks that will contain a textbook, a practice book, and a letter of encouragement from the scouts who will be assisting in the project. Furthermore, a care package for all 300 students will be prepared to provide items that are hard to get on the island. Each care package will consists of masks, hygiene products, and socks.
The total budget for this project $10,767.27. I worked over this summer to support this project, but still need to raise additional funds to cover the amount. I would like to see if I could raise more than the amount budgeted. All funds raised beyond the amount will be provided to ILEMO so that they can continue to carry out their work.
Thank you for your time in reading this. If you are willing to help, can I get your support by November 12th, 2021? Once again, thank you very much. My goal is to have all 300 backpacks delivered to Haiti by middle of December 2021.
