Destination Loading CIC: Creating Brighter Futures for Young People in the North East

Almost a third of adults in the North East have low financial resilience — struggling to cope with unexpected costs or manage money with confidence. The region has the highest proportion of adults not coping financially of any English region.

These challenges don’t begin in adulthood — they start much earlier.

We are two former secondary school business teachers from the North East who have spent our careers helping young people build confidence and essential life skills. Although we’ve stepped away from the classroom, our passion for supporting young people continues to drive us. We saw first-hand how a lack of financial literacy affects not just a person’s bank balance, but their mental wellbeing, their choices and their long‑term opportunities.

Why This Matters

The challenges facing young people in our region are significant:

• Rising Child Poverty: Around 30% of children and young people in the North East are growing up in poverty — higher than the UK-wide rate, and even higher in some communities.

• Widespread Insecurity: Financial insecurity is a generational cycle. Almost half of people in the North East have very little financial resilience, with many households unable to cover an unexpected expense.

Without early intervention, these financial hurdles are passed from one generation to the next.

Our Solution: FundEd

We are establishing Destination Loading CIC, a community‑focused organisation equipping young people with the real‑world knowledge and confidence they need to step into adulthood.

Our first programme, FundEd, is an immersive workshop designed to help secondary school and college students build real‑world money skills. Through FundEd, students will:

• Build confidence in talking about and managing money

• Experience budgeting through a realistic “first wage” simulation

• Demystify debt, interest and the risks of “Buy Now, Pay Later” schemes

• Navigate social media by challenging “get rich quick” myths and influencers

• Strengthen essential life skills: problem‑solving, communication (oracy) and decision‑making

FundEd is designed to reach the young people who need it most — ensuring financial education isn’t limited to schools that can afford it.

• Deliver 10 fully funded pilot workshops across the North East

• Reach over 250 young people directly

• Finalise inclusive, accessible resources for different learning needs

• Gather impact data to refine and scale the programme
