Statistically, I was not supposed to be here. As a first-generation college graduate from Fort Lauderdale, the odds were not in my favor. Too many young Black boys from neighborhoods like mine never complete college. I refused to become a statistic. After graduating from Florida State University, I joined Teach For America and spent nearly a decade helping students from underserved communities reach graduation. I watched students who had been counted out walk across stages. That work changed me. When I transitioned into corporate Learning & Development, I saw that inequity doesn’t end after college—it shifts into hiring, promotion, and leadership access. The work of expanding opportunity is just as urgent in boardrooms as it is in classrooms. That’s why I’m pursuing my MBA at Simon Business School—to gain the strategic and financial tools to influence systems at scale.
