This is exactly what a life-changing Catholic boarding school outside of Nairobi, Kenya, is doing for vulnerable children from nearby informal settlements. Working closely with local leaders, they handpick children who need help the most—children who were once left to fend for themselves in iron-sheet shacks, surrounded by sewage and crime.

At this school, these children find refuge. They are given a home—a safe, peaceful place where they can escape the noise, hunger, and dangers of their previous lives. Here, they get more than just an education: They receive nutritious meals made from locally-sourced ingredients, opportunities to grow through extracurricular activities, and a nurturing community that believes in their potential.

Before attending the school, many of these children had been out of school for months or even years, with overcrowded classrooms and limited opportunities in their informal settlement schools. But this boarding school offers them a real chance—classes of only 27 students, compared to 100 in their previous school, so each child gets the personal attention they deserve.
