Change for Chaz

My son, Chaz Evans, is in need of help.
Years of substance abuse and mental illness have deteriorated his health and family relationships, and now, 20 year old Chaz is dedicated to getting sober. In December, he was involuntarily admitted to Osawatomie State Hospital, and then spent time in homeless shelters in Kansas City. After a recent suicide attempt, he was admitted to the Truman Medical Center. They have helped him immensely by assisting him with Medicare and seeking out recovery programs. At some point, he also applied and was approved for food assistance.
Chaz has been on a waiting list for a 21 day recovery program called ReDiscover that assists with further rehabilitation, including therapy, employment, and possible placement into a sober house for a time.
However, he needs a place to stay as soon as possible until he can start the program. My wife, Rebecca, and I are unable to house him because his three younger siblings still live at home. We have secured a place for him at The Light Center in Baldwin City, Kansas, which would provide him with a bed (sometimes he will stay in a tent on the grounds), and an opportunity to work within a sober community, as well as get assistance on his sobriety journey. I personally know this is a very positive and helpful community to be a part of for whatever time he needs. It would allow us to be close by and assist him, rebuilding the relationship within our family and give him a safe place to stay with minimal risk of relapse.
Our goal is to raise $1000 to help us help Chaz during this time of rehabilitation at The Light Center. In the event that he needs an extended amount of time and cannot stay on at The Light Center, we are also looking into some backup plans such as short term rentals or campsites, which charge around $20-30/night, equaling $600-900 for a month. The funds raised would also assist Chaz with transportation & other essentials. We will be in control of any donations at all times.
Any money not used before he is admitted would be kept safely with us until he has completed the program and used toward getting him back on his feet. We would be grateful for just $5 - anything helps. Really.
As many of you know, I have also struggled with mental health issues and financial hardship. I have always been painfully aware that I was one unfortunate event away from homelessness or institutionalization. Our society is not set up to support people like me and my son, so that community must be created.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Much love and thanks for your time.
Love,
Carrie, Rebecca and Chaz
