Kanawha Valley Challenger Baseball Field
The Little League Challenger Division is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. Any individual with a physical or intellectual challenge may participate. Kanawha Valley Challenger Baseball currently servers 50 families throughout the Kanawha Valley and currently uses the baseball fields and facilities at Nitro City Park that are not handicap friendly.
Our plans are to build a lighted artificial turf field with handicap accessible dugouts, handicap accessible restrooms, and handicap accessible bleachers for our Challenger players and families. At the current location, games and practices have to be canceled or moved indoors due to inclement weather, but an artificial turf field would alleviate most of the issues with adverse weather conditions and give the players more opportunities to play. The site of the new field will be located next to the Nitro High School Softball Field and is easily accessible from Nitro High School parking lot. We have estimated that construction of the field will cost $400,000.
The creation of this field would give more disabled individuals in Charleston and surrounding counties the opportunity to participate in Challenger Baseball by removing obstacles that have previously kept players from participating in this unique program. After we have built this field the League will be able to promote and advertise the program across West Virginia and we believe the number of participants will grow exponentially.
