My name is Mendy Boyarsky, and earlier this year I opened Aleph Meats, a butcher shop located in the Cavendish Mall in Montreal, with a clear mission: to bring down the price of Kosher meat for Jewish families! Thanks to our supply chain in South America and our innovation, our products are about 30% cheaper than the competition. We are proudly certified Kosher with the KSR (“Kosher Supervision of the Rabbinat”, under Chief Rabbi of Quebec, Rabbi David Sabbah). But Aleph Meats is facing a huge hurdle: the largest Kosher certification issuer in Canada, MK Kosher (a branch of the Jewish Community Council of Montreal) has locked-in its longstanding dominance on the market. Through exclusivity clauses with retailers such as grocery stores, caterers and shuls, MK Kosher prevents any business which has a different certification from entering the market. To be clear, this is ILLEGAL. That is why we have launched a legal case before the Competition Tribunal of Canada, alleging “exclusive dealings”, “anti-competitive behaviour” and “abuse of dominant position” on the part of MK Kosher, to force them to drop these practices. Our legal team is great, but not cheap: any donation would help in our quest to open up competition in the Montreal market and make your grocery cart more affordable! Even $1.00 is prefect, showing your moral support is a driving force!
