IT FEELS SURREAL TO BE CLOSED TWICE!
Re-opened December 20th, 2019-closed March 11th, 2020
Chaiwali our Indian restaurant with a big heart crossed many boundaries; female founder and chef, bringing mindful Indian home cooking to the melting pot community of Harlem, reviewed by Pete Wells of the NYT five months after opening and then having to close in the fall of 2017 to complete city required building restoration. After a two year struggle armed with determination, work and personal savings we managed to finish the job, and finally re-open Chaiwali three months ago with a team of hard working dedicated people.
These people bring Chaiwali to life; and now as our beloved restaurant closes for a second time many of them live on the edge of having no income or security, and this time around I am asking for help. In an effort to continue to support our staff and their families during an extraordinary phase, we are raising money from our community of loyal customers, neighbors, friends & family to provide immediate relief to help assist with our staff’s lost income. While we hope there will be some government assistance, it might not be enough when it does happen. 100% of proceeds raised here will be donated directly to our team of workers to assist them.
Please consider making a donation to help support our staff, truly any small amount counts and is so appreciated. If your company has created a donation program, try to list us as one of the recipients. At this time of uncertainty we have elected not to do take-out food in an attempt to further keep our staff safe from co-working situations, but are working on other retail ideas, which we will post soon on our website (www.chaiwali.com), or follow us on instagram chaiwaliharlem Stay well, stay calm, drink chai and we hope to welcome you back to Chaiwali for act three!
