Chaitanya’s Journey
In 10/2020 Chaitanya (Dave) went into kidney failure and began his dialysis journey in 5/2021. Despite the ups and downs of dialysis, he stuck with it for the next few years. In December 2023 he lost his beloved mother, Rekha Dave, whom he had cared for over the past 20 years. Shortly after this he contracted covid-19 and was admitted to the hospital a day before his 68th birthday on December 23rd. While admitted to the hospital, he developed severe abdominal pain at his umbilical hernia site and was rushed into emergency surgery for a potential bowel obstruction and incarcerated hernia. 10cm of intestine were removed and he began his healing journey in the hospital until he was discharged to rehab. The transition to the rehab and his usual dialysis center was a difficult one with failures in his medical handoff. In 1/2024 he was readmitted to the hospital with complaints of severe pain in his abdomen and colon. He was diagnosed with a C. dificile infection that led to a perforation of his colon. He was rushed into emergency surgery again where he underwent a complete colonic resection and came out of the OR intubated and with an ostomy bag.
Since his two emergency surgeries, Chaitanya has had a prolonged and difficult hospital course. These invasive procedures left him incredibly weak and unable to take care of himself in even the slightest capacity. Given his decline in health and the long, difficult road to any potential recovery, Chaitanya is reflecting on what a meaningful life is. He completed his final stages of life at Wellbrooke of Carmel surrounded by friends, family, and doggy through his final breaths. Om shanti.
