Chairman Meow’s Cancer Fund

Three years ago this summer, a magical spirit cat appeared on my patio. I think one of the last acts on this Earth of my magical spirit Old Man Cat Floyd was to call him to me. Chairman Meow moved in after my beloved Floyd passed, and immediately became my Emotional Support Cat. FIV+, but not letting that get him down, he turned out to be the gentlest, cuddliest, most loving, most supportive comrade a person could hope for — and when I had a health crisis of my own last year, I definitely needed love and support. I don’t think I’d’ve made it through without the Chairman (who’s nickname around the house is Pudge).

Unfortunately, last September, Chairman Meow was diagnosed with cancer. He has a high-grade sarcoma in his neck that has metastasized tohis lungs. But we’re no strangers to kitty oncology care; George Francis, Good Kitty, my big, dumb, blonde, fifteen-year-old fluff has been beingtreated for intestinal lymphoma at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialist andEmergency Center for more than two years now. He’s doing amazingly, appears to be immune to time, and is slated to live forever with proper continuing care.
Pudge has had a bit of a harder time — he’s got a tougher cancer — but so far with some pretty aggressive chemotherapy, the disease is under control in his neck and disappearing in his lungs. Unfortunately, recently, the mass in his neck began pressing on his spinal cord, leaving him with weakness in his right legs. He’s learning to get around with some restricted movement, but if this gets worse, he might need surgery.
The thing is, with TWO cats needing continuing oncological treatment, it’s just getting to be pretty tough for us financially. We’re not too badly off — I make very little as a university adjunct instructor, but my fuzzier half’s hourly wage as a legal document reviewer is pretty good; the problem is, his work is entirely contingent, and he can have downtime between contracts at any time, so we always need to keep an extra mortgage payment in the bank and so forth. It’s just that we’ve had A LOT of vet bills in the last few years. A LOT.
So I’m raising funds for Pudge. Once a month he gets a chemotherapy treatment, to the tune of about $450, plus follow-up bloodwork that’s about $110. Every other one of those treatments is closer
to $700, because he has to have imaging done. We had an unexpected $540 last week when his little legs went weak. A surgery on his neck would be in the neighborhood of $2000. George’s continuing care is about $300 every six weeks; my unbelievably amazing mom helps out with his bills, but she’s retired, and all tapped out.
Maybe this sounds like a lot for a cat to some people. I guess if you don’t understand, I probably can’t make you understand. But I love Chairman Meow with my whole heart; I couldn’t love him more if he was human. He’s my family, and I’d do anything I possibly could for him to have the longest, happiest life possible. His gentle, unconditional love kept me alive during one of the mentally darkest times of my life; he’s one of my favorite things on Earth. And so if there’s ONE THING that could get me to beg for money from strangers on the internet ... here it is. Please help me help Pudge. He’s magical and wonderful and deserves it.
