(Info as of 9/29/19)
This fundraiser is to help with medical bills for Chad Lanning following a life-threatening bacterial infection that resulted in 18 surgeries to remove infectious tissue and over $2 million dollars in medical expenses, that Chad’s health insurance does not cover.
Chad and Kaytlyn Lanning reside in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Kaytlyn is a Child Therapist at Harmony House CAC in St. Clairsville and a contract Therapist at The Center for Professional Counseling in Wheeling, and Chad recently graduated with his Master’s in Business Administration and was in the process of forming his own technology company. The couple enjoy spending their weekends with their dogs, family, and renovating their home.
On July 31, 2019, Chad woke up very ill and weak and was taken to Wheeling Hospital by ambulance. Within a few hours, Chad was life-flighted to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) due to a life-threatening bacterial infection that entered his body from an in-grown hair. Chad was diagnosed with Necrotizing fasciitis, commonly known as flesh-eating disease, which is an infection that results in the death of parts of the body's soft tissue. It is a severe disease of sudden onset that spreads rapidly. Necrotizing fasciitis can lead to sepsis, shock, and organ failure. It can also result in life-long complications from loss of limbs or severe scarring due to surgically removing infected tissue. Even with treatment, up to 1 in 3 people with necrotizing fasciitis die from the infection.
Since July 31st, Chad has had 18 surgeries to remove the dead tissue, down to the muscle layer, along his right back, side, hip, groin and thigh. Chad remains at UPMC and has recently received a donated skin graft and faces on-going physical therapy and future skin graft surgeries. Despite having health insurance, Chad’s current medical bills are over $2 million dollars and his out-patient therapies and medications will be out-of-pocket for the couple. He will have 6-12 months of recovery following his unforeseen hospital discharge. This fundraiser is to assist in out-of-pocket medication and treatment costs for Chad’s continued recovery. We appreciate every donation or share and would like to thank you all for your support!
