Chicago Hospitality Accountability Action Database (CHAAD), was founded in June of 2020 out of a need to hold the Chicago hospitality industry accountable to statements of Black Lives Matter after the murder of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020. In addition, we keep track of what establishments are protecting and uplifting their staff during COVID-19. It is run by a decentralized, racially diverse group of queer folk, women, and men. Its focus is to transform the hospitality industry from a place of exploitation and harm and into one of accountability, growth, and healing.
The hospitality industry is a community where people of all backgrounds come together to create meaningful connections and experiences for guests and themselves. The purpose of CHAAD is multifaceted. It’s to ensure this industry remains a safe place for all communities involved. We focus on but do not limit to uplifting Black, brown, undocumented, LGBTQ, disabled, and other hospitality folks. Part of our work includes informing the public of their favorite establishments’ equitable practices. As well as focusing on how chefs, owners, and those with power can do better at creating safe places that work for us all.
Our CHAAD team brings decades of experience in hospitality, art, design, data collection, project management, entertainment, writing, and more to this project.
We take social media posts and other statements made by hospitality businesses and insert them into our database, holding them as social contracts. All data collected is open to the public. We are looking for businesses to follow through with statements of growth in the following ways:
The redistribution of funds: donations, sponsorships, change of internal payment structures, healthcare
Accountability: acknowledgment, apology, racial + equity audit
Aide: supply drop-offs, food drives, community clean-ups
Investments: scholarship funds, diversifying purveyors and suppliers, diverse hiring
Education: anti-racist training, guest education
Covid-19 responsible practices
CHAAD’s information will function as a centralized place accessible to anyone seeking to protect themselves or hospitality workers. This will give hospitality workers needed opportunities for accountability and healing from their employers. In addition, businesses will thrive having access to fully laid out plans of action for building equitable establishments. Consumers will be able to incorporate the quality of establishments equitable practices when choosing which establishments to frequent or support.
What your backing will fund:
CHAAD App: a searchable, location-based app where anyone can search the restaurants in their area and see which ones are following through with their social equity promises and statements.
CHAAD Website: A resource hub. Along with the database, people will have access to unemployment resources, hospitality + COVID-19, in-take audit, racial + equity audit, anti-racist resources, how-to’s to make your workplace more equitable, and more.
CHAAD Zine: A monthly zine that will employ local writers, artists, and editors to speak on their local hospitality industry. The zine will focus primarily on the unheard voices of the industry: among them the dishwashers, bussers, line cooks, and hosts who can provide us with an inside look of how the hospitality industry functions. It will showcase the future we are building and the creativity of the people that make up our community.
CHAAD Events: We are re-imagining new ways to keep in community and enjoy good food, drinks, and entertainment while staying socially distant and healthy. By employing local artists and entertainers CHAAD will create space to showcase local talent, educate, and inspire change and accountability.
Budget: $2,500
CHAAD Crew: We do not believe in free labor and want to pay all folk involved! The CHAAD team believes in this project and have thus far been dedicating their time and labor free of charge. Your backing would give us the ability to pay our amazing team what they are worth so we can keep putting out work that continues to challenge and grow the hospitality industry.
Thank you for supporting us! We know together we can transform the hospitality industry into one where Black lives thrive.
