Urgent Life Saving Surgery for Kai
We have set up this page to help a beautiful and loving 11-year-old boy named Kai Moreland. Kai has severe Scoliosis with spinal rotation and urgently needs to have Posterior Spinal Correction with Instrumented Fusion. This surgery will be lifesaving by protecting his vital organs from being compressed by his curving spine and twisting rib cage.

Kai's Story
Kai is a boy of courage with a lion heart. His journey has been difficult and complicated thus far. At a young age, Kai was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder called “Andermann Syndrome” which causes many secondary conditions such as epilepsy and tremors. Due to his low muscle tone and peripheral neuropathy, he has developed scoliosis, tight Achilles and foot drop. Kai has sadly never stood or walked independently, however can sit up by himself. Due to his scoliosis progressively worsening he is now in a lot of pain as well as having difficulty sitting up and needs extra support.

Since Kai was diagnosed with scoliosis, he has worn multiple braces over the years which have been intolerably painful and stressful which also triggered his epilepsy, sometimes causing as many as 2 to 3 seizures a night.

Kai and his family currently live in Bali, Indonesia where his dad Brad, works for a children’s education charity and his mom Twone, is his primary caregiver for his 24/7 needs. Over the years Twone and Brad have watched their sweet, determined boy’s condition worsen. They have dedicated themselves fully and done everything possible to give Kai the best life and future he deserves. As Kai’s condition is declining at a rapid rate, they have reached out to medical professionals globally for suggestions and answers. Reluctantly, it has come to the point where they have no choice but to have surgery to help their son.

Most of us cannot imagine the fear Twone and Brad must be feeling when they think about this high-risk surgery, not to mention how much they have been through already. After months of extensive research, Kai has been accepted by a surgeon in South Africa who specialises in complicated cases such as Kai’s. When this major surgery occurs, the costs will be significant, and Kai will face a long and painful recovery period of 2-3 months having to remain near the hospital with his family until he is fully rehabilitated.
A long and difficult road is ahead for Kai and his family, but a price cannot be placed on what a successful outcome will mean for them. Kai will be able to sit up straight without assistance and build strength in his spinal muscles thereby relieving the constant pain he feels. His vital organs will regain the space they need to continue growing and developing, meaning they can nourish and support his growing body meeting his physical needs. The intense strain on Kai's body overall will ease, his quality of life will improve dramatically, and in fact, be saved.

The family’s medical insurance will not cover this surgery and has never covered any of Kai’s medical expenses. All of his extensive medical care up to this point has been paid for by Brad and Twone. It's now that they find themselves in need of our support.
We have started this GoFundMe page because we know Brad and Twone’s community want to help, and this is how we can. By joining together to raise the funds they need, our intention is that they can focus all their efforts on the other details that go into preparing for Kai’s surgery.
He is currently at the ideal age; having the surgery earlier would have meant having multiple surgeries to insert longer rods to allow for growth every other year and leaving it any longer will complicate the surgery and is simply not an option due to the concern of how rapidly it is progressing. The time is now for Kai.
Let’s hold Kai and his beautiful family during this time and get them to South Africa as soon as possible. Together we can help this treasured boy and give him a better quality of life. Any donation that you can give will make a massive difference.
We would love for you to share this GoFundMe Page and if you want to follow Kai’s spinal surgery journey, please join the Facebook page his mother has set up for news and updates https://www.facebook.com/KaiSpinalSurgery

A few words from Casey
N.B. GoFundMe don't support Kai's region (Indonesia) which is why I created this fundraiser on behalf of Twone Moreland (Kai's mother). Donations will be transferred into my account and then Brad Moreland's (Kai's father) UK bank account on a weekly basis.
Please direct any questions to either myself or Twone and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
