I am being blessed with the amazing opportunity to attend the celebrated Freedom Writer's Institute in Long Beach, CA this coming June. This 5-day training, led by the legendary Erin Gruwell and the staff of the Freedom Writer's Foundation is professional development of the highest quality designed to train and support educators of at-risk and vulnerable students who need extra support in our schools while also retaining the most dedicated of teachers in the education profession.
The institute requires educators to participate in and learn the Freedom Writers Methodology, an educational (pedagogical) framework that provides innovative approaches and procedures to engage even the very most reluctant learner in the educational process, enlighten and challenge them intellectually, while empowering them to achieve academic and civic success.
Educators who earn the title of Freedom Writer Teacher return to their jobs with greater satisfaction and a stronger committment to teaching and learning. There are higher student success rates and lower student drop out rates. The classroom becomes one lead by the heart and compassion for each otherrather than one lead by the leaden mantle of compliance and discipline.
Freedom Writer Teachers continue to be encircled in the arms of the Freedom Writer Family as they join a venerated cadre of dedicated education professionals from across the world. Ongoing support and professional development throughout the school year continues after the institute and includes the Empowerment Symposium. Freedom Writer Teachers are change agents in their schools and communities, have received many celebrated teaching awards, and even become published authors.
I have wanted to teach like Erin Gruwell since the moment I saw the movie and then when I met her in person for the first time a few years ago at an NCTE conference in Orlando. Ms. G is first and foremost a teacher from the heart, and I pride myself on being the same. The old adage that "Students don't care what you know until they know you care is true." I know that I am a good teacher, but I want to be the best teacher I can be for the students to come. I want them to know that, if they feel as if no one else cares, "Mama Frierman" (as many of my students come to call me) always cares and is always there. Participation in the Freedom Writers Institute will allow me to do even more for even more students so that no child who crosses my classroom threshold feels unloved, unwanted, unworthy or incapable. Instead, every child will feel empowered, educated, and strong enough to follow their dreams.
WHAT IS THE COST?
The cost of the institute is $5000 per educator and includes: 5 days of workshops led by Erin Gruwell, curriculu, hotel, meals, and year-round support as a Freedom Writer Teacher. Preferably, funds need to be in place 1 month prior to the start of the institute, which begins on June 23, 2017.
As the mother of 2 in college and a 3rd who will graduate and head of the college in a year, any assistance in offsetting the cost is very appreciated. Teaching is my life's work and calling. This is an investment in our students who will reap the many benefits and advantages of this life-altering and career changing professional development.
