Keith Fuller has been the Horticulture Agent in the St Johns County, Florida Extension Office of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences for nearly 20 years. He has written a weekly gardening column for the St Augustine Record, the local newspaper, for free for more than 30 years. (The UF is attempting to make him quit this volunteer effort.) Under his guidance, the local Master Gardener program has prospered and been recognized as one of the finest in the state, garnering many state awards and recognition. All-America Selections has recognized the St Johns County Agricultural Center as the only one in the state of Florida for its floral and vegetable gardens. His involvement with the 4-H Plant Sciences Club has them ranked first in the state for a number of years and third nationally.
The University of Florida has summarily dismissed him (a UF graduate) because they can “fire anyone for no reason” simply because he is not tenured. And then the UF both slandered and libeled him. The Associate Provost said that after termination the UF could say whatever it wants and that it did not “count”. This is destroying his good reputation and career.
Fuller is seeking return to his job and is going through the UF appeals (grievance) process and is now at Step III (arbitration with the American Arbitration Association). The UF Regulations are finally allowing him to be represented by an attorney in this process and funds are needed to pay the attorney, the arbitrator and the fees assessed by AAA.
If you have an interest in gardening and/or don’t believe than an innocent man should be treated this way, won’t you please help this man who has done nothing wrong?
