Help kids from CF go to DC!

You can help young leaders from Central Falls change the world!

My name is Seth Kolker, and I’m raising funds to help my class travel to Washington, DC. This year, some incredibly inspiring students are co-creating a brand new course with me that’s called “How to Change the World.” Budget cuts have left them with only three semesters of social studies in high school. So our trip to Washington will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from leaders in their fields. We hope to visit non-profit organizations, think tanks, museums, historic sites, cultural groups, schools, and more. And we need your help to pay for our transportation down to DC!

Background: this is my third year teaching in this amazing community. We're a city in Rhode Island that takes up one square mile and has over 20,000 inhabitants, representing 103 countries. Many are immigrants; most live below the poverty line; and all of them are part of one of the most close-knit, resilient, driven, and vulnerable communities in the state.

The goal for our course on “How to Change the World” is simple and bold: by the end of the year, each student will have a working theory of how they want to change the world. All year, we're going to meet inspiring student activists, lawyers, non-profit leaders, community volunteers, and elected officials who are working to make local change happen. And in April, we'll travel to Washington, DC for a weeklong trip students are planning themselves.

These young leaders' interests are diverse so our site visits in DC will be, too. They're curious about everything from robotics to politics to immigration to education, so they’ll design field trips in DC that align with their passions. Students will stay near DC with host families in my hometown of Arlington, VA. These hosts are old family friends. They're going to participate in a beautiful cultural exchange between two communities I've learned to call my own, as kids from one of the most marginalized parts of our nation explore their capital city.

Central Falls families work hard every day to live the American dream. Teaching here has proven to me that young people from this city - with all their grit, love, and wisdom - are going to transform their community and our globe for the better. Thank you for supporting them as they learn the skills and make the connections they'll need to change the world.

Fine print: due to some bureaucratic red tape, this GoFundMe isn’t linked directly to the district. Donations go through a third-party account to our program (so they are not tax-deductible). Please feel free to contact me with any questions about our project or how you can get involved.
