Gauge Edwards lung transplant
Gauge will be the first Cystic Fibrosis pediatric lung transplant patient in the valley.
Our family needs your help as we go through this journey.
Gauge is a 14-year-old teen with cystic fibrosis (CF). He is very excited about starting high school this year. Gauge goes through his 1.5-hour breathing treatment routine every morning in order to meet up with his friends at school. He has a modified schedule and comes back home after lunch in order to get in another round of breathing treatments. He finishes his homework, eats dinner, and has one more breathing treatment routine before bed. These treatments help with airway clearance. Without them Gauge ‘s lung would fill with mucus. He does this every day, along with his exercise and doctor appointments, yet he keeps a very positive attitude.
The past few months have been particularly trying. Gauge spent the majority of his summer in the hospital. Despite the daily treatments, Gauge’s lung have continued to deteriorate at an alarming rate. At the end of the summer, his doctors decided it was time to have a serious talk about a lung transplant. Having a loved one with cystic fibrosis, you know this day will come; we just were not expecting it to come so soon.
Through much research and consideration, we decided to go to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. CF pediatric lung transplants do not happen often; therefore, we had to choose a hospital that not only has performed the surgery but would also offer Gauge the highest survival rate. As the Boise CF team and our family start to prepare for this process, we’re now calling on our friends and family for support.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 in order to help Gauge and his parents relocate to Houston, as well as to help with the unforeseen costs of this life-saving transplant. Gauge will need to be no further than 1 hour from the hospital the entire time he waits on the transplant list, and then remain in Texas another 3 months after the surgery.
