Centre for mental help support for victims of wars

Hi, my name is Josée and I am raising funds for a family in need to escape from the Gaza Strip and realize their dream of leading a peaceful and constructive life. I have known this family personally for over 8 years. The father, Shaher, is 31 years old and an excellent mental health counselor with a very successful track record. His expertise is in war trauma and PTSD. This is a skill in high demand all over the world, but especially here in Canada, my home country. Here is his personal letter explaining his situation (translation to follow):

اسمي شاهر زعيتر وابلغ من العمر ٣١ عاما.

لدي ٣ اطفال صغار ، سوار ٦ سنوات ، واياس ٤ سنوات. وبهاء ١١ شهر … وزوجتي طبيبة أسنان.

أعمل أخصائي نفسي في وكالة الغوث الدولية لاغاثة وتشغيل اللاجئين الفلسطينيين UNRWA وحاصل على ماجستير الصحة النفسية المجتمعية.

مرت الحرب بشكل يصعب وصفه، تم تهجيري من بيتي واجباري للذهاب للجنوب في رفح. وانضممت لفريق عمل الايواء برفح لتقديم الخدمات النفسية للنازحين. تحت الظروف القاهرة.

لقد تعرضت للموت أكثر من مرة ولحسن حظي نجوت.

أنا أصبحت متيقن أن خبراتي العملية والمهنية لا تجد مكانها في قطاع غزة، فحقل الصحة انهار بشكل كارثي وأصبح من المعقد تقديم خدمات الصحة النفسية في هذا البلد الصغير.

علاوة على ذلك كيف لشخص تعرض للموت المحقق لاكثر من مرة ومصاب باضطراب الصدمة النفسية وهو مستبصر بهذا ومدرك لجميع المعايير التشخيصية التي يعاني منها أن يقدم خدمات الصحة النفسية.

سأكون واضحا لرؤيتي المستقبلية إن بقيت على قيد الحياة

سأهرب بأسرتي الصغيرة لأي مكان آمن، خارج قطاع غزة وسنخضع جميعا للعلاج النفسي وبعد ذلك سأبدأ بمشروعي وهو مركز لتقديم خدمات الصحة النفسية لضحايا الحروب والصراعات. مع زوجتي العزيزة. ستكون التكلفة بمبلغ لا يقل عن 45 ألف دولار ولهذا أرجو منكم مساعدتي في الحصول على هذا الهدف لأنقذ أسرتي الصغيرة.

Translation:

''My name is Shaher Zuaiter and I am 31 years old.

I have 3 young children, Siwar (6), Ayas (4), and Bahaa (11 months). My wife,Ola, is a professional dentist.

I work as a Counseling Psychologist with the International Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees UNRWA. I hold a master’s degree in community mental health with extensive work experience in a war zone.

The war went on in a way that is difficult to describe. I was displaced from my home and forced to go south to Rafah. I joined the shelter work team in Rafah to provide psychological services to the displaced under force majeure circumstances.

I came close to lose my life many times and fortunately, I am still alive. I have become certain that my practical and professional experience do not have a place in the Gaza Strip anymore, as the health field has collapsed catastrophically and it has become complicated if not impossible to provide mental health services in this small part of the world.

Furthermore, having been exposed to certain death more than once, my family and I now suffer from psychological trauma disorders. Through my awareness and professional expertise, I know and understand what the diagnostic criteria for such disorders are. As someone who himself suffers from psychological trauma disorders, how can I continue to try to provide mental health services?

My intentions are to take my family to a safe place away from the Gaza Strip. We will then have to undergo psychological therapy prior to starting my project of establishing a centre which will provide mental health services to victims of war zones and conflicts with my dear wife.

We expect the cost will be at least $45,000, so I ask you to help me achieve this goal and save my little family.

I will keep you informed about everything happening with us and intend to write a novel titled: Psychological Trauma of the Psychologist.''
