Celia Hughan is a fearless nearly-3 year old little girl who lives in Bowie, MD with her family. She’s full of energy, loves her big sister and brother and adores her twin brother, Ben. She likes playing with her cousins, reading books and is a Momma’s girl who has Daddy wrapped around her little finger! She has a sweet smile, a happy disposition and a belly laugh that could tickle the funny bone of even the grinchiest of Grinches.
Today it isn’t books and belly laughs though. Today, Celia was diagnosed with cancer. Hepatoblastoma to be exact, a rare form of liver cancer that can occur in low birthweight babies like her and her brother.
Celia & Ben were micro-premies born 3 1/2 months early. From birth she & her brother have overcome incredible odds. Celia has had respiratory infections, gastrointestinal issues resulting in an ostomy bag (recently reversed), and countless surgeries and hospital stays. But Celia isn’t just fearless, she’s a fighter.
Even as she and her family waited for her chemo IV to be set up, she sat calmly in her hospital bed watching cartoons on her tablet. This tiny little spitfire has already endured so much, and still she has such spirit in her. When she smiles up at you, you can see the laughter peeking out from behind her eyes just waiting to break free—she is pure hope.
Celia & Ben’s birth and subsequent surgeries and hospital stays have been financially as well as emotionally trying for their family . The financial strain of this new development in Celia’s healthcare makes a terrible situation even more difficult.
