Celebration of Life - Mang Lee

Our mother, Mang Lee, was born in Pa Kay, Xiangkhouang province in Laos in 1968. Her father’s name was Fa Yia Lee and mother’s name was Youa Vang. Our maternal grandparents died when mom was a child. She lived as an orphan with relatives from both sides of her family until she married our father, Xao Long Vang, at 15 years old.
In 1988, our family escaped Laos and found asylum in the Thailand refugee camps. In 1992, our family resettled in the USA and arrived in Fresno, CA. Our resettlement was made possible by a petition from our grandpa Vang Xang Vang.
In 2000, mom started working for Foster Farms in Fresno, CA, a poultry factory. She had worked there for a little over 20 years when she contracted COVID-19 during an outbreak in early December 2020. On January 18th, 2021, our mother died from COVID-related complications. Our mom was only 52 years old.
As our family grieves, we wonder if Foster Farms did enough to protect our mom. So many refugee and immigrant parents also share our mom’s story. It is the poor and marginalized that are disproportionately affected by and dying from Covid.
We will remember our mother for her many humbling qualities. She loved her children and family deeply. She was talented in making Hmong clothes for her children. She was our favorite chef and had a green thumb. Her voice was loud and powerful. Mom’s laughter was always genuine. Mom was such a hard-working and giving person.
Although our mom was an orphan at such a young age, she defied the odds and made a life for herself. We are extremely proud of our mom. While her death is tragic, our mother will continue to live on in us, in every act of love, courage, and justice.
