Celebration of Life: Gary Lee Stevenson

Donation protected
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Gary Stevenson—a caring husband, proud father, loving grandfather to nine, great-grandfather to two, and a cherished friend to many. If you knew Gary, you understood that he was one of a kind—stubborn, sharp as a tack, and unapologetically himself. Whether he was shouting at the TV during a 49ers game, finishing a crossword puzzle in pen, or giving you his unfiltered opinion on the state of the world, Gary certainly left an impression.

As we prepare to say goodbye, we want to honor him in a way that reflects the life he lived. Gary wasn’t the type to express his love through flowery words or quiet sentiment; instead, he showed it through actions, sarcasm, and humor. He was also a walking encyclopedia, especially when it came to American history. He could argue a strategy like a general, and if Fox News didn’t cover it, Gary probably had a few books on the topic. His love for newspapers, current events, and historical facts was not just a hobby; it was an essential part of who he was.

Gary had a fierce love for God and sports. He was as devoted to the Lord as he was to the 49ers, with the Giants and the Warriors trailing closely behind. If there was a game on, you could find him watching, standing, praying, or yelling in the living room as if the players could hear him. He played softball for years, becoming a Senior Softball Champion while participating in various leagues, and he never quite accepted that he was “getting older.” He certainly didn’t act like it.

Every morning, Gary would sit down with his orange juice, the newspaper, and a pen to tackle the crossword puzzle. We never saw him use an eraser; he would shake his head if you even suggested looking up a clue. Gary wasn’t perfect—and he’d be the first to admit (or not admit) that. But he was real. He was present. He was ours. We miss him more than words can express.

We are asking for your help to support the costs of his memorial service and to assist our family during this incredibly difficult time. If you ever shared a laugh with Gary, argued with him over politics or history, bonded over a ball game, or were fortunate enough to be part of his family or a friend, we ask that you consider donating and sharing this with others who knew him.

Thank you for helping us give him the goodbye he deserves.
