My name is Rebecca Denis; I have created this fundraiser on behalf of my family to raise funds for my Tio's funeral.
On March 24, my Tio Samuel Hernandez passed away unexpectedly. My grandmother found him unconscious, and when the paramedics arrived, they could not revive him. My family is in shock, confused and devastated. We are coming to our family, friends and extended community asking for help so that we can give him the memorial he deserves.
My Tio Samuel was a vibrant, charismatic individual. He always kept an open heart and spirit until he left us and was extremely kind and giving. He was a renaissance man who thrived at whatever he set his mind to. He was a lover of music who grew up singing with his siblings who are also musically gifted. He enjoyed painting and art. For many years he pursued his lifelong dream to become an actor and was able to get minor roles and remained passionate and inspired by theatre, film, and actors. He was also passionate about educating youth and worked as a teacher for many years. Samuel taught ESL, drama, and film classes.
In these past two years, he took care of my 90-year-old grandmother. He ensured she was safe and became her right-hand man and daily companion. My grandmother's wish is that we bury my Tio Samuel next to my grandfather. Unfortunately, my grandmother lost another son not even a year ago, and we could not bury him under those specific circumstances. The loss of Samuel has also affected her greatly. We are saddened that she lost another child in such a short time. My family would like to fulfill my grandmother's wish to make that a reality this time. We hope that with the help of our community and those who loved and cherished my Tio, we can raise funds needed to put him to rest and at peace, honoring his and my grandmother's wishes.
We wish that our family was not in the position of needing to ask for help, but we feel convicted that we have to try to honor him as best we can. We are aware that this is a tough time for folks financially, but we believe in the power of community and are humbly asking for any funds individuals can spare and they will be accepted with the utmost humility and appreciation.
He is survived by his three children, several grandchildren, his mother, siblings and many nieces and nephews who loved him greatly. In addition, family across the country and Mexico are grieving from afar. We ask that you keep us in your prayers and send love our way, even if you cannot donate. We also encourage you to hug and tell your loved ones how much you love them and how much they mean to you. On behalf of my family, I thank you so much.
