Carla Sue Hanson (August 10, 1956 - February 6, 2020), our beloved and most beautiful mother, sister, daughter, friend, artist, nature-lover, swimmer, and free-diver... a truly amazing woman and majestic mermaid.
Carla passed away peacefully on February 6, 2020 in Newport Beach, California as a result of triple negative metastatic breast cancer. Only diagnosed in early December 2019, she spent those last two months in the care of her close family and friends, who love her and miss her dearly. Treatment was attempted with much fight, love, and support, but it couldn't catch up with the aggressiveness of the cancer. She is survived by her daughter, brother, and sister-in-law; her adorable pets - a French Bulldog, LuLu, and two tortoises; and countless amazing friends from California and all around the world.
Please join me, her daughter China, in celebrating her extraordinary life that touched and motivated so many people and so profoundly impacted competitive free diving. Our small family is nothing but grateful and happily overwhelmed by all the love from her friends near and far, and the amazing diving community, who have reached out in recent weeks in efforts to provide support.
